The German certification system DGNB (Deutsches Gütesiegel nachhaltiges Bauen= German Quality Seal for Sustainable Construction) has been established by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen e. V. to provide a measure for the sustainability of buildings.
Points are awarded in the following six environmental categories; however, location quality is not included in the overall assessment:
- Ecological quality
- Economical quality
- Socio-cultural and functional quality
- Technical quality
- Process quality
- Location quality
Different usage profiles allow the certification of new and existing buildings and districts in Germany. The usage profiles include:
- Office and administration buildings
- Trade buildings
- Industrial buildings
- Residential buildings
- Small residential buildings
- Hotel buildings
- Educational buildings
- Healthcare buildings
- Laboratory buildings
- Mixed use
- Urban districts
- Office and administration districts
Also an international system has been established for the construction of new office buildings.
Depending on the level of performance, the buildings are awarded with the quality seal in silver (50%), gold (65%) or platinum (80%) (before it was bronze, silver, gold).
